Can MatLab provide a variable in an answer?

I'm trying to set up an equation that revolves around an undefined variable, a. I would like "a" to be within the numerical output that MatLab provides, such as solving an integral where "a" is undefined. Is this possible?

If you have the Symbolic Math Toolbox, that may well be possible.

Without knowing more, I doubt that would otherwise be possible.
