Why do I receive MathWorks Licensing Error 29?

When starting MATLAB I receive the following error:

MathWorks Licensing Error 29. A licensing error occurred while trying to use <PRODUCTNAME>. Unable to find a network adapter. Check that your computer has a network adapter installed.

This error can occur on a Mac OS X machine if there is no built-in ethernet device and you try to start the Network License Manager on the machine. In order for the license manager to work, there must be an Ethernet device on the machine and that Ethernet device must be labeled "en0."
