Save graphic object in an axes to mat file

Supposing that I have a figure with axes, which contains several graphic objects, e.g. lines, texts, perhaps also some GUI elements. Is there a way to save these objects, maybe separately or together, into a .mat file?
I am using the elder 2011b version, which still using the handle graphics.

Why not save it as a .fig file?
