Is there some reason why inpolygon is unsatisfactory? It is already in MATLAB.

My guess is, you did not know it exists is the reason.

I'm sorry, but you are not being clear here. inpolygon allows you to detect if a point is inside a general polygon. Where the polygon came from is irrelevant.

So what do you mean by "no contour polygon"?

if you read the documentation on inpolygon there are two outputs in the function. In and On.

 [IN ON] = inpolygon(X,Y,xv,yv)

where X and Y are the points you are checking and xv and yv are the defining points of the verticies of the polygon. So the output IN would be 1 for the points inside the polygon. the output ON is if it lies on the contour or "edge".
