Connect to a Java program from within MATLAB

Greetings,
Most of the MATLAB Java Interfaces that exist, help establish a MATLAB session from within Java and then execute commands in MATLAB from the Java application. Is there a way to trigger the launch of a Java application from within an open MATLAB session that then establishes a connection to the already open MATLAB session?
Thanks in advance for any help!

The demo for MatConsoleCtl shows how to connect to MATLAB from outside, and how to connect to MATLAB from inside:
https://github.com/diffplug/matconsolectl
It's an actively-maintained fork of the original matlabcontrol.
