change toggle button programatically (image processing toolbox)

I would like to toggle menu/toolbar items on/off programmatically for the implay function.

Specifically, I want to turn on the "Maintain Fit to View" item in the Menu:

set(findall(0,'tag','uimgr.spctogglemenu_Maintain'),'Checked','on');

Or, toggle the related icon in the toolbox

set(findall(0,'tag','uimgr.uitoggletool_Maintain'),'State','on');

These items do appear as changed in the menu/toolbar, but the callback functions do not execute like they do when the items are clicked on/off in the window.
