How do I get a license number for matlab?
Do I need to buy it or is it supposed to come free for the lessons?

https://www.mathworks.com/academia/tah-support-program/eligibility.html to check to see if your university has a campus license.
Some universities might provide academic licenses to students a different way; you would need to contact your university for that possibility.
Some courses are MOOC (massive open online courses); the instructors for those courses are responsible for providing the license codes.
If none of these apply then you would have to purchase the license yourself.
