Running a program with an external trigger

Hi,

I am looking for a function that is very much like the timer function, but executing a timer function not with a pre-defined time, rather with an external trigger. The main program should be running all the time, and this trigger will only temporarily interrupt the main program. Any suggestions? Thanks!

'external trigger' is from one of the NI daq board's digital outputs, for example.

I have no answer, but I take for granted the Matlab has a solutions in an appropriate toolbox.
