I'm starting to get into detection algorithms, and im thinking of playing with importing videos in MATLAB for now, but I encountered this problem

The correct syntax is implay('vid1.avi')
Your avi file is not located in the current folder or in a folder on your MATLAB path. Therefore, MATLAB can't find it. If it can't find the file, it obviously can't play it.
