index_of_first = 1;
index_of_last = length(YourVector);
If you mean an element with a particular value, then
index_of_first = find(YourVector == TheValue, 1, 'first');
index_of_last = find(YourVector == TheValue, 1, 'last');

[~,idx_first]=min(x)
[~,idx_last]=max(x)
