Why do I receive an error when installing in a directory where MATLAB has already been installed?

When installing an add-on toolbox to my MATLAB, I get the error:
Cannot install in the specified directory. The existing MATLAB installation in that directory is either too old to overwrite or the product data file is missing or corrupted.
How can I install my add-on toolboxes?

The error means that you may be installing the wrong MATLAB version of a toolbox into your MATLAB installation. All toolboxes are version specific. You must install toolboxes that are of the same release as the existing MATLAB installation.
NOTE: If you attempt to install the wrong version of the toolbox, you may have to reinstall MATLAB to install additional toolboxes. Installing the wrong toolbox version can corrupt your MATLAB installation so that no extra installations can occur. Similarly, you will not be able to uninstall MATLAB from the uninstaller or through the control panel. To uninstall, you will have to physically remove the MATLAB folder.
