In presence of Inter Symbol Interference (ISI), the Maximum-Likelihood Sequence Detection (MLSD) is the optimum equalizer for minimizing sequence error rate. The performance of the MLSD is directly relates to the free distance. The given function calculates the minimum distance of BPSK transmission over ISI channel. The .c file should be compiled first by command "mex freeDistance.c". The example.m shows how does the mex function works.
