Issue with xlsread interactive selection

I have a Mac. I am trying to read in an excel file using readxls('filename',-1) which should allow me to interactively chose the columns I want to read in. For some reason, its not letting me. It doesn't open the excel file and tells me that interactive selection cannot be used in 'basic' mode. Anyone out there know what this means or know how to fix it. Thanks.

The xlsread interactive selection is only available on Windows platforms.
