How can I solve a computer connection problem?

Whenever I try to connect my computer -with the iPad application- I receive a message that says: A server with the specified hostname could not be found.
I have double checked all the information needed to connect but still I'm not able to.
Thanks for any help.

You might need to specify an IP address instead of a hostname.

I had specified the IP and still had that problem

Are you able to ping the host from your iPad ? Are you able to telnet or ftp to the host from your iPad? Are you on the same side of the firewall or network address translation for both machines?
