loading .mat files with gpuArray's onto computer without a GPU

Hello all,
I have a number of .mat files that contain variables of type gpuArray. I just tried loading that .mat file onto a computer without a compatible GPU, and I got an error within load saying the current GPU does not support GPU compute 1.1 or higher. I was hoping Matlab would automatically cast those variables to the system memory space in those cases instead of throwing a terminal error. Is there a way to get around this or do I have to resave the .mat files cast to system memory-space?
Thanks, Mike

Unfortunately, there is no other workaround.
