problem with enhancing image using histeq

i want to enhance the contrast of a grayscale image but i cannot seem to make it work. this is the code i wrote
Z1 = rgb2gray(Image1);
x1 = histeq(Z1);
axes(handles.axes2);
imshow(x1);
