Activation keys for newer versions should work with older versions too.

Activation keys are used primarily for Student licenses; you might have some difficulty as a student in trying to download an older release.

The online store is not available in all countries; you might need to contact Mathworks Sales or even a distributor in some countries.

For the countries where the store can be used, you purchase licenses for MATLAB and whatever other products you need, and you will be sent license numbers (at least for regular kinds of licenses; I am not completely sure if Home licenses get them.) You can then go through the license center if you need activation keys, as activation keys depend upon your hardware.
