Double click opens in current running Matlab instance on Linux

Hello everyone,
Is it possible to have Matlab open its file types (.m, .mat ...) without using its GUI by double clicking just link on Windows?
If I try to do that a new matlab instance is launched. I do not find many people complaining about that, so I am guessing there is something wrong with my setup.

So you want something like having your Linux filemanager send an instruction to edit a file to a running matlab? If so I've never heard of anything like that. Why not using the matlab gui to select files to edit?
