Hi. Whenever I try to use any variation of matlabpool, e.g.
endmatlabpool open
I get an error that says the following:
Java exception occurred: java.net.UnknownHostException: joe: joe at java.net.InetAddress.getLocalHost(Unknown Source)
where joe is the name of the pc. I'm using UBUNTU 12.04, I've installed Matlab today for the first time in Ubuntu. All the installation files are in a folder created by me in /home/joe/matlab .
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much

Within matlabroot/toolbox/distcomp/bin, there is a program called "admincenter". Within the Admin Center there are a number of connectivity tests under the "Hosts" menu.
As Walter indicates there is a DNS or hostname problem here. The ways to solve DNS issues on Linux is dependent on what sort of environment you are in (standalone machine, corporate, academic, etc) and what distro you are using. Use the tests in Admin Center to get you going in the right direction, either showing them to IT staff or looking at Ubuntu documentation on the web.

Is "joe" defined by your DNS server, or at least in your /etc/hosts ? Note for this purpose that if your hosts file has a fully qualified name only and does not have the short alias used by your active hostname, then the fully qualified version will not be assumed.
Though really the details depend upon the distribution. See http://jblevins.org/log/hostname
