Calculate image similarity using cross correlation (single value)

I need to compare between Mutual Information and Normalized cross-correlation to find better similarity measure for multimodal images.
Calculate similarity between two images using Mutual information get single similarity value. How can get a single value for cross-correlation as similarity measure?
Hint: I don't want to use normxcorr2.
