Segmentation of 3D Brain MR Images

I do not know anything about MR images, and I am required to implement a paper that segments 3D Brain MR images using Markov Random Fields.
I think I should start by simulating some MR images as the paper suggests "Markov Random Field Segmentation of Brain MR Images" by Karsten et.al 1997.
I do not have any idea how to go about simulating MR images. Can anyone kindly guide me through the steps required? or refer me to a tutorial to help me understand properly?

You could skip that first step by directly obtain synthetic MR images from http://mouldy.bic.mni.mcgill.ca/brainweb/. You can then concentrate on the segmentation aspect.
