Convert HG2 fig files (R2016a) to HG1 fig files (R2014a and older)

Dear all,
I have generated a series of figures using R2016a (HG2) and I would like to know if there is a way to convert these fig files or save a new copy that is compatible with the old graphics (HG1) up to R2014a.

If you used savefig() without using the non-default 'compact' option, then in theory the .fig files contain a duplicate copy of the data in HG1 format for use with earlier versions of MATLAB.
