connecting arduino and joystick with matlab

Hi I have a project that requires reading data from a joystick, and the data will be sent to arduino that is connected to the matlab to control my hardware, so the joystick will control the hardware! how can I achieve this? is the joystick blocks compatible with external mode- used to connect arduino- ??
