Appending data into mat file without loading

I have a variable named A in existing mat file. No I want to add some columns of data into A.But i dont want to load that mat file. Can I directly copy the data into A without loading that mat file variable into workspace.

You can append additional variable to the MAT file with

save -append

but you can't alter a saved variable. You may want to think of a algorithm that has the column information in the variable name like A001, A002 to achieve your goal.
