From a binary image containing a word, how to split it into sub-words using the notion of connectedness and the horizontal and vertical projection .... that's all ^ ^

If just connectvity is your constraint, I would use bwconncomp and maybe regionprops. If "CLOSE" needs to be defined, then look at bwdist.
