Creating, and hence analysing a depth map from two images

Hello everyone, I am working on a project where I have to detect the distance between two objects by means of stereoscopic imagery and depth maps. I was looking online but I couldn't find proper tutorials on how depth map creation is made. After creating the depth map, the next step is to detect or found out the distance between two objects.
