How to find the closest point to lat/lon?

Hi all,
I have two grids grid 1 and grid 2, which I want to find the closest points of grid2 to the points in grid.
Both grids are in latitude and longitude.
I would appreciate your help as I am struggling.

Closest point in terms of true distance traveled along the surface (so the distance along a great circle?) Or simply a closest point in terms of some metric in degrees? The two would be different.
