Guide on an Idea

Im trying to create a program to detect objects in a picture and keep count. So basically what im thinking is that i will have a database which will contain objects or symbols i want to detect in a picture. The program will then use this database of objects and scan the picture for this specific object and then get a count for it. The objects will be 100% similar to the ones on the drawing but the scale might be different.
I just need guidelines on how to start and is that even possible to do?
Thanks in advance,

Well the object detection worked. However, i got no idea how to implement the object counting to make them both work together. Can you please provide more info on that matter. Thanks in advance,

And how to actually make the object detector code to detect more than 1 object of the same type or reference.
