bwskel documentation confusing about connectivity

The documentation about bwskel (https://nl.mathworks.com/help/images/ref/bwskel.html) is confusing IMO.
First it is stated that bwskel works with 8-connectivity

Then it is compared with bwmorph and explained that results may be differents since bwskel works with 4-connectivity

But I have applied bwskel to a 4-connectivity image and the resulting image has been converted to 8-connectivity:

After bwskel

Is there a way to perform a skeletonization preserving the original 4-connectivity?
Thanks
