Yes that is true. I purchased Matlab Student version R2015a this past summer. I have to reinstall Windows 10 again causing me to have to reinstall applications. When I went and installed Matlab I got R2015b without any additional cost. It works.

You can update MATLAB student software to the latest release with MathWorks Software Maintenance Service. Please refer the page below for more information

There is currently no upgrade (free or paid) for Student Versions.

That is understood for now. My question was: when the new version R2015a (which will be out by March/April 2015) is released, what is the possibility to upgrade to such version from R2014a without incurring further fees/purchase order?

It is difficult to predict the future. Based on what happend in the past, there will be no such update possibilty.

So we cannot upgrade to r2014b with the student edition either?

traditionally there was not a 'b' version for students (i.e. student version usually are R2012a, R2013a, R2014a, ...etc)

My answer was correct when I posted it, but please see Shantanu's updated answer based on a new MathWorks offering.
