How to create impulse noise? (e.g. interference in a cable plant)

I need to know how to create a signal that I can use to represent impulse noise in a cable plant. (e.g. interference) Then I need to know how to put this signal on an oscilloscope. I know this is a very broad question but anything will help! Thanks.
