matlabpool open 4 gets stuck indefinitely

I have a script that I've been using for some time, and for reasons I don't understand it doesn't work anymore.

When I run matlabpool open 4 at the command prompt, it simply prints

Starting matlabpool using the 'local' profile ...

and hangs from there.

I thought it might be a problem with my installation, so I reinstalled MATLAB R2013b, but that didn't fix the problem.

Thoughts?

There's definitely something going wrong here, I would suggest contacting MathWorks install support to try and resolve this.
