mex etymology and prononcuation

What is the meaning of mex (where does it come from)? What is correct pronunciation? In particular the last letter is English 'x', or Greek 'Chi' (as in Latex)?

MEX stands for MATLAB Executable, so pronunciation is just a normal english X
