This third-year quantitative physiology course and accompanying lab cover the description, quantification, and modeling of human physiological systems, based on systems fundamentals. Components, relationships, and homeostatic controls of neural, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular systems are covered. Application of mathematical modeling and MATLAB simulation to further understand the systems and relate physiological consequences to changes in environment or component function are also discussed. Experiments involve the modeling and measurement of animal and human physiology systems. Calibration and validation of models are conducted through hands-on experiments. Focus is on quantitative measurement of neural, cardiovascular, and muscular system functions.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Use basic terminology and fundamental understanding of anatomy and physiology to describe the structure and function of several major human systems.
- Build mathematical and computational models to quantify dynamic physiological relationships between components of these systems.
- Delineate underlying assumptions and define the limitations of the models developed in the course.
- Describe methods of measurement and monitoring of physiological systems.
- Work in teams to accomplish creation, testing, validation, and presentation of a numerical model of a physiological system.
- Use appropriate measurement systems and data-analysis techniques to calibrate and validate simulation models of physiological systems.
