need suggestion for generating feature vectors for handwritten recognition

hi, i'm using neural network(patter recognition) for handwritten text recognition. I need suggestion on what algorithm should i use to generate feature vectors, i'm using "moment invariant" but i'm having trouble with that. so plz suggest me any different algorithm for generating feature vector.
