How are variables accessed in Simscape when importing a model from Simscape Multibody Link Plug-In

I have imported an assembly from solidworks into simulink and the variables are defined externally on a matlab (*_DataFile.m) file. I want to know how the simulink model links the variables from that file into the model workspace as I do not have to run the matlab file before running the simscape model each time. I'd like to use this function for some other projects that do not use the multibody link plugin.
