How to fix - MATLAB crashes when trying to open import tool

When I try to launch the import tool MATLAB will crash and then appears to automatically start running the debugger...how can I correct this issue? Sometimes the import tool won't open, and sometimes it allows me to select my file and the import tool opens the file name but none of the data it contains. I am using 2016a trial version because there is an issue with verifying the licensed version which our IT is correcting now...

I'm unable to reproduce this behaviour on my end.Please provide reproduction steps.

My situation is slightly different but not too much.
OS: Mac 10.15.3
Matlab version: R2019 Update5
Reproduce steps:
  1. use app designer to give 'data = uiimport;' to a button callback function.
  2. run app, click button, click 'clipboard' in the select source dialog.
  3. pop up the Import Tool panel.
  4. Whereever I click, it will freeze forever and I have to force quit matlab.
