Why does Matlab udp only receive packets when Wireshark is running in the background?

I've written a basic script to capture and store a certain amount of packets. The udp object only increments the .BytesAvailable when wireshark is in the background. As soon as I turn off wireshark, my script stops collecting packets and as soon as I turn it back on, it will continue collecting.
