How to map 3d point cloud on 2d plane and define a longitudinal axis

Hi, I have an object and a support plane as a 3D point cloud. What I want to do is map the extremes points of the object on the supporting plane and define a longitudinal axis. How should I solve this problem? Thank you for all help.
