Detecting capsules from a 3-D stack of MRI images

I have a 3-D stack of MRI images and I want to detect the position (centroid and bounding box) of capsules arranged randomly in a cylindrical container. An image of a slice along the axial direction is shown in the following figure:
As you can see, capsules have a random orientation and only by chance a capsule parallel to the slice plane appears in this sample slice.
I noticed that in MATLAB 2017b the Image Processing Toolbox was improved and I would like to know if there are some functions suitable for my task.
I know that, for example, ImageJ has a plugin for this, but I prefer to process my datasets in MATLAB.
