Why do I see:
Can't reload '/usr/local/MATLAB/R2017b/bin/glnxa64/libmwdastudio.so'
or
Can't reload '/usr/local/MATLAB/R2017b/bin/glnxa64/libmwsl_graphical_classes.so'
when trying to start Simulink on a Debian 9 machine?

This error suggest your machine is missing the libnss3 package. Although this is included in most of the Desktop configurations of Debian 9 you may need to install/reinstall it. Please run the following in a terminal window:
$ apt-get install libnss3
After installing the package please restart MATLAB and attempt to launch Simulink. You should no longer see these errors.
