Buttons in GUI of compiled standalone apear flat

When I create a GUI with Guide the buttons look nice with a border as long as I start it from within Matlab. As soon as I generate a standalone version with the Application Compiler and start the .exe the buttons appear "flat" with no differentiation from the background. Please see example below.

This was a known bug of that particular version of Matlab if I recall correctly. It was fixed for R2016a, I don't know if a workaround was ever produced. I always built compiled apps in R2015a for the duration I had R2015b.
