12 can be separated into an infinite number of numbers. What is so special about 8 and 4 ?

that is just the example that what I want... because I need to split the value into two random numbers... may be 12 can be split into 6 and 6 or 7 or 5...

If you mean how to do it randomly with integer numbers:
N=12
a=randi(N)
b=N-a
